Let's Change Up the Conversation
Blogs and magazines usually cater to a specific niche. There are blogs and magazines that are dedicated for travel, food, gadgets, housekeeping, cars, lifestyle, etc. Lifestyle blogs and magazines are usually gendered specific to cater to the needs of each sex.
Most of the content found in lifestyle blogs and magazines are informative and based on facts. Blogs and magazines have variety of topics. For magazines that come out monthly, the topics usually revolve around a theme. As for men and women’s magazines and blogs, they usually focus on the opposite sex to enhance communication between both sexes.
The purpose of women’s blogs and magazines is to empower women all around. It’s a feminist movement. They usually give advice on dating, how to dress up, how to put on some makeup, how to raise kids, how to be independent, dos and don’ts in a relationship, how to lose weight, etc. They give general advice on how to look good and powerful as a woman. They are gender-biased and they want their readers to feel and act powerfully as women and to be equals if not more powerful than men.
Men’s blogs and magazines, on the other hand, give tips on working out, proper diet, dating, etc. The content is more general and less gender-specific compared to women’s blogs and magazines that purposefully write content where only women can relate to.
Men and women’s blogs and magazines sometimes have overlapping content. The difference is that the articles written in women’s blogs or magazines always highlights how to look good or how to look better than other women. They show stereotypes of what women should be as dictated by society. The articles written in men’s blogs or magazines give general advice on how to be cool and confident. The content is usually something where both genders can relate to such as doing proper exercises, the right kinds of food to eat for a proper diet, how to have a healthy relationship, etc.
Esquire is a magazine for men with a staff of different genders and with articles and content that are gender neutral. Most, if not all women’s magazines usually have staff who are women and the content and articles written are directed towards women. Esquire helps its readers build their confidence whether the readers are men or women. Women’s blogs and magazines, on the other hand, tend to make women more insecure about themselves because of their portrayal of how women should be as dictated by society. Although Esquire is great in the sense that it produces content that is gender neutral, like any other men’s blogs or magazines, it still shows erotic images of women. Women are sometimes treated as an object in men’s blogs and magazines which is not good. Women’s blogs and magazines actually do the same thing. They also show pictures of women in bikini with bodies that are to die for. They actually enforce more harsh and damaging standards of beauty as compared to Esquire.
When you look at the articles written in women’s blogs and magazines, the titles are almost always the same. It seems that there is a pattern and they become predictable. Men’s blogs and magazines tend to come up with a balanced set of topics or articles with a purpose of entertaining both genders. Blogs and magazines articles should be written in a more neutral tone to keep them interesting.
